Do you have parts of your body that jiggle and wobble a little more than you would like? If so, you most definitely aren’t alone. Excess fat is something that the vast majority of people suffer from. However, when you have lost weight and/or worked particularly hard to tone up, it can be incredibly frustrating to be left with areas of stubborn fat that won't shift irrespective of how much time and effort you put into your diet and exercise regime. Sometimes, this frustration can turn into a serious dislike of a specific aspect of your appearance that causes you to feel self-conscious and stops you from wearing clothes you would like or doing things that you would like to.
Cosmetic surgery can address virtually any aspect of your appearance, and one procedure, in particular, is used to deal with stubborn wobbly bits – liposuction.
Liposuction is the name given to a popular form of cosmetic surgery that focuses on removing stubborn pockets of fat from specific, pre-determined areas of your body. Typically, liposuction is performed on just one key area at a time, and most patients choose the one part of their body that they feel most self-conscious about. Common areas of the body to have liposuction performed on including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, flanks and upper arms.
Liposuction is nearly always performed under a general anesthetic. This is important as it means that you are completely still for the duration of the procedure, and you will not feel any pain.
The procedure itself is performed in two parts. Firstly, you will have a salt water solution injected into the fat cells in the area of your body that is being targeted by liposuction. This saltwater solution helps to break up the fat cells which will make it much easier for them to pass out of your body during the main part of the liposuction process. This second part of the procedure involves a long, thin tube with a hole in the center, called a cannula, is inserted into the target area. The cannula is attached to a small vacuum that will be used to suck out of the broken-down fat cells. The cannula is moved back and forth to loosen the fat further and it is removed, sent through a tube into a container where they will later be discarded.
Liposuction can normally be performed in under three hours depending on the area being targeted. However, an overnight stay is usually recommended so that our surgical team can be satisfied that you have made the appropriate recovery from the general anesthetic and there are no complications from either the anesthetic or the surgery itself. You will also be given specific instructions to follow during your recovery which should be followed precisely.
It may take a few weeks for the swelling to subside and for you to see the full effect of your liposuction procedure. However, once you have fully healed, you should find that the target area is much flatter, smoother and more toned than before. This will help to restore your confidence in your appearance and give you the body that you have worked so hard to achieve.
