Consultation and Evaluation

• You will start with a detailed consultation with Dr. Faulkner to discuss your goals, expectations, and medical history.
• Dr. Faulkner will examine your breasts to determine the most appropriate technique for your lift, depending on the degree of sagging and your breast tissue.

Stop Smoking

• If you smoke, you should stop smoking at least 6 weeks before surgery. Smoking can affect circulation, impair healing, and increase the risk of complications like infection and wound healing problems.

Medications

• Avoid blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDs, for at least 1 to 2 weeks before surgery.
• If you’re on any prescription medications, discuss them with Dr. Faulkner, who may advise adjustments or temporary discontinuation.
• You may be prescribed antibiotics before surgery to reduce the risk of infection.

Fasting

• Fast for 8 hours before the surgery (no food or drink).

Arrange Transportation

• Since breast lift surgery is typically done under general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home after the surgery. It’s also helpful to have someone stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours as you recover.

Shower and Clean Skin

• Shower and wash your skin thoroughly before the procedure to minimize the risk of infection. Avoid applying lotions, deodorants, or perfumes to the breast area on the day of surgery.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

• On the day of surgery, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing you can easily remove and put on without having to pull over your head.

Rest and Activity

• Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 1 to 2 weeks. You should limit physical exertion and avoid lifting anything heavy (over 10 pounds) for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
• Avoid raising your arms above your head or performing any upper-body exercises during the early stages of recovery to prevent strain on the incision areas.

Support Garment

• You’ll likely be asked to wear a surgical bra or compression garment for several weeks after surgery. This helps reduce swelling, supports the breast tissue, and helps the healing process.
• Follow Dr. Faulkner’s recommendations for how long to wear the support garment.

Incision Care

• Keep the incisions clean and dry. You may be given specific instructions on how to clean the incision sites and what products to use.
• Avoid scrubbing or applying excessive pressure to the incision areas. Be gentle when cleaning.
• Do not apply any ointments or creams unless instructed by Dr. Faulkner.

Swelling and Bruising

• Swelling and bruising are common after breast lift surgery. This should subside gradually over the course of a few weeks.
• Apply cold compresses or ice packs (with a cloth to prevent direct skin contact) for the first 48 hours to help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Pain Management

• Take pain medications as prescribed by Dr. Faulkner to manage any discomfort. You may experience soreness, tightness, or a feeling of heaviness in the breasts.
• Over-the-counter pain relievers (like acetaminophen) may be recommended, but avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen or aspirin) unless otherwise instructed, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Follow-up Appointments

• Attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled to monitor your recovery, check for complications, and remove stitches (if necessary).
• Dr. Faulkner will assess how your breasts are healing and may suggest adjustments in care if needed.

Avoid Sun Exposure

• Avoid direct sun exposure on your breasts for at least 6 months after surgery to prevent scarring and pigmentation changes. You can use a high-SPF sunscreen once the incisions have fully healed.

Monitor for Complications

• Watch for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge from the incisions. If you experience fever or persistent pain, contact Dr. Faulkner immediately.
• It’s also important to monitor for seroma (fluid accumulation) or hematoma (blood collection) around the incision area. These complications require prompt attention from Dr. Faulkner.

Resuming Normal Activities

• You can typically return to work after 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how you feel. If your job doesn’t involve heavy lifting or strenuous activity, you may be able to resume work sooner.
• Light activities like walking can help stimulate circulation and reduce swelling, but avoid intense exercise until Dr. Faulkner gives you the green light (usually after 4 to 6 weeks).

Scarring

• Scarring is a natural part of the healing process, but it may take several months to a year for the scars to fully mature and fade.
• You may want to consider scar treatments such as silicone sheets or topical gels, which we sell in our office, but always check with Dr. Faulkner first before using any products.

Important Signs to Watch For

Contact Dr. Faulkner if you notice any of the following symptoms after your breast lift in Rockville:

• Severe pain not alleviated by medication.
• Excessive bleeding or signs of infection (redness, warmth, or drainage from the incision).
• Fever over 100°F (38°C).
• Difficulty breathing, chest pain, or shortness of breath, which could indicate a serious complication.
