Are you a candidate for Lumecca IPL?

At Faulkner Plastic Surgery, our team thoroughly evaluates your medical history and ensures you feel confident about your care. While Lumecca IPL is generally safe and effective for various skin concerns, some individuals may benefit from alternative treatment.

The Ideal Candidate

Lumecca IPL may be suitable for individuals struggling with:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Acne scars
  • Melasma
  • Vascular concerns

However, we typically recommend intense pulsed light in Rockville for patients with lighter skin tones, as darker skin may have a higher risk of hyperpigmentation.

Contraindications for Lumecca IPL Treatment

Lumecca is a generally safe and effective treatment for a variety of skin concerns, but like any cosmetic procedure, there are certain contraindications—conditions or situations in which the treatment should not be performed due to potential risks.

These contraindications are important to keep in mind to ensure safety and avoid adverse effects:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid Lumecca treatments, as the safety of IPL technology during these periods has not been sufficiently studied.
  • Active Skin Infections or Conditions: Active skin infections, such as herpes simplex, impetigo, or any other bacterial or viral infections in the treatment area, should be treated and healed before undergoing Lumecca. Active eczema, psoriasis, or other inflammatory skin conditions may also be contraindications, as IPL can irritate these conditions.
  • Tanned or Sunburned Skin: Sunburned or recently tanned skin is more susceptible to injury from IPL treatments. Lumecca should not be performed on freshly tanned skin or on skin that is actively sunburned to avoid excessive irritation, burns, or pigmentation changes.
  • Use of Photosensitive Medications: Certain medications can make the skin more sensitive to light, increasing the risk of burns or pigmentation changes. These medications, including Isotretinoin (Accutane), should not be used for at least 1 year before a Lumecca treatment. Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline, tetracycline) and other photosensitive medications should be discontinued before treatment. Please let Dr. Faulkner know if you are taking any of these medications.
  • Dark Skin Types: Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI) are at a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation after IPL treatments. IPL works best on fair to light skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-III), as darker skin may absorb more light, which can lead to unwanted side effects.
  • History of Keloid Scarring: Keloid scarring or a history of hypertrophic scarring may be a contraindication for Lumecca, as there is a risk of exacerbating these conditions.
  • Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: If you’ve had recent chemical peels, laser treatments, or any type of microdermabrasion, it is important to wait until the skin has fully healed (typically 2 to 4 weeks) before receiving an IPL treatment like Lumecca.
  • Severe or Uncontrolled Medical Conditions: Conditions such as active cancer or uncontrolled diabetes (which may interfere with healing and skin response) should be discussed with Dr. Faulkner before proceeding with a
  • Lumecca treatment: Autoimmune diseases or other systemic conditions that affect skin health and healing may also require caution.
  • Tattooed or Permanent Makeup Areas: These areas should generally not be treated with Lumecca, as the pigment may absorb light and cause adverse reactions, including burning or distortion of the tattoo.
  • Implanted Devices or Medical Conditions (e.g., Pacemakers): The light may interfere with the device’s functioning.
  • Open Wounds, Abrasions, or Lesions: These are contraindications, as IPL can cause irritation and delay healing.

During your consultation for intense pulsed light in Rockville, we will help you understand if any of these contraindications apply to you and recommend alternative treatment as needed.
